Deep Activism

with Alex Jackimovicz

Over the past seven years, Alex has developed a new system and model for understanding activism, its challenges, and how there is a more nuanced and deeper path than traditional paths of activism. Deep Activism is a compilation of new theories, and ideas of organizing for social, economic, and cultural change which expands conventional notions of activism to be more than self-defense and standing up for justice.  Deep Activism includes the “inner” personal work of development of activists and leaders as a priority and equal element in importance to the “outer” work activism of transforming the world. Deep Activism consists of several major topics such as “Inner Work of the Organizer”, “The Shallow vs. the Deep”—shallow, reform activism in contrast to activism focused on systemic and fundamental changes, “Right relationship”—coming into proper relation, what this means for individuals and society, economies, and “Neohumanistic ethics, education, and application—NEEA”.

Alex will discuss some of the significant challenges activism and activists face, navigating self-development work with activism, reorienting activism for deeper rather than shallow reforms, and especially noting where contemporary activism has fallen short and why. The material will include how individuals navigate working within activist spaces, understanding what we have to contribute, and what our role may include.

Alex Jackimovicz is an activist, spiritualist, and small businessman living in Boothbay, Maine. A licensed master electrician, he is also a co-founder of the Alliance for Economic Democracy. He has volunteered as an organizer with a variety of social and economic justice campaigns and organizations, including the Maine People’s Alliance, the Maine Small Business Coalition, and the Maine Fair Trade Campaign. Alex has been a writer and speaker on trade, economic democracy, public banking, economic justice, and alternative economics.
