Local Food Security & Distribution Systems

with Steve Phillips

Steve will present a brief history, the current situation and future vision of local food in Hawaii. He will also describe how his business, Local Harvest, fits into this vision.

Steve is the Hawaii representative for PROUT (the Progressive Utilization Theory). He shares PROUT’s philosophy, which believes strongly in local self-reliance, a cooperative-based economy and the divine nature of all beings. He worked for cooperative businesses on the mainland for 22 years. He moved to Maui 14 years ago and has worked for Down to Earth Natural Foods and Kapalua Farms. Steve has a passion for local food. Eleven years ago he and his wife Ana started Local Harvest with the purpose of building the local food supply. He now oversees four businesses that work toward that purpose: Local Harvest Wholesale, Island Fresh Home Delivery, Napili Farmer’s Market and Sattvic Kitchen Products. These businesses now gross about $3,000,000 in sales (1,500,000 lbs) per year, by working with local growers and customers on five Hawaiian Islands.
